Guide to Drug Laws in the San Francisco Bay area
Most laws related to drugs are made at the state and federal levels. See our Guide to Drug Laws in California and Guide to Drug Laws in the U.S.
Marijuana is regulated at both the state and local level. See our Guide to Marijuana Laws in San Francisco.
What does it mean to decriminalize a drug, and have any cities in the bay area done it?
Drug laws are made at the federal, state, and local level, and local governments cannot simply ignore state and federal laws (see Legal Basics). But cities sometimes “decriminalize” certain things such as drugs, which means they choose to not prioritize enforcement of these laws.
San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Oakland have decriminalized magic mushrooms aka psilocybin, along with all plant-based “entheogenic” hallucinogen drugs.
